About Us
Welcome to Western Stoneware – Beginning a New Century!
Western Stoneware was started in 1906 when 7 local potteries joined together to form Western Stoneware. In June 2006 we celebrated our 100th year anniversary. Western Stoneware has also recently changed ownership as three long time, former employees purchased equipment to continue operations.
What types of stoneware do we make?
We will have many new items such as bowls, bowl sets, baking dishes, food preparation and serving items, in a variety of colors, as well as our old traditional pieces such as jugs, bean pots, and cheese crocks. Our stoneware is attractive enough to go from the oven to the table.
Where is our stoneware made?
All of our items are made in Monmouth, Illinois U. S. A. and are handcrafted with the same methods used by potters over several generations.
How is our stoneware made?
Our stoneware is fired at over 2200°F which gives the pieces their rich glossy appearance and makes them easy to clean after use. This high firing also makes them oven proof, dishwasher safe and microwaveable.
Stoneware has excellent thermal qualities so it will keep” hot foods” hot and “cold foods” cold longer than other ceramic items. This excellent thermal quality also is quite noticeable when baking as it virtually eliminates hot spots or uneven baking. Pies, breads and pizza will come out of the oven looking like those done professionally.
We have many exciting colors to choose from and our glazes make clean up much easier than un-glazed items. (Our glazes contain no lead so are safe for use with any food or liquid.) There is no “seasoning required”.
Former customer?
For our former customers, we would like to say thank you for you’re past business, and hope you will try us again.
New customer?
To the new customer we would like to introduce you to American made stoneware. It’s rugged and durable; many pieces have been handed down for several generations.
